Trading the opening gap
- Gap up
- Stock opened above the previous close and can either extend higher (gap-and-go) or fade back toward it (gap fill).
- Gap down
- The mirror pattern on the downside - opened below the previous close.
- Why gaps matter
- They concentrate overnight news, earnings, and sector moves into a single price jump at the open.
- What confirms a gap
- Volume and the first 15–30 minutes of price action usually separate gaps that hold from gaps that reverse.

What is a gap up / gap down?
A gap occurs when a stock opens at a price noticeably different from its previous day's close, with no trading in between. A gap up opens higher than the prior close; a gap down opens lower.
