What is a breakout?
A breakout happens when price moves decisively above a recent resistance level (or below a support level for a breakdown), often on higher-than-usual volume, signalling a potential new trend.
Why do day traders watch breakouts?
Breakouts mark a shift in supply and demand - sellers who defended a level have been overwhelmed, or buyers who defended a floor have given up. Traders use them to enter early in a new move.
What's a false breakout?
A false breakout is when price briefly clears a level but fails to hold, quickly reversing back inside the prior range. Pairing breakouts with volume confirmation helps filter these out.
